Repeated moral hazard with effort persistence

چکیده

We study a problem of repeated moral hazard where the e¤ect of e¤ort is persistent over time: each period’s outcome distribution is a function of a distributed lag of past e¤orts. We show that when the utility of the agent is linear in e¤ort, a simple rearrangement of terms in his lifetime utility translates this problem into a standard repeated moral hazard. As a consequence, the optimal consumption pro…le is observationally equivalent to that of a related problem without persistence. This suggests that the presence of persistence does not necessarily change the properties of optimal contracts. Journal of Economic Literature Classi…cation Numbers: D30, D31, D80, D82.

I study a problem of repeated moral hazard in which the effect of effort is persistent over time: each period’s outcome distribution is a function of a geometrically distributed lag of past efforts. I show that when the utility of the agent is linear in effort, a simple rearrangement of terms in his lifetime utility translates this problem into a related standard repeated moral hazard. The solu...

Repeated Moral Hazard with Persistence∗

This paper considers the optimal contract when the current (hidden) action of an agent has a persistent effect on the future outcome. In this setting, the current outcome is not only a signal of the current action taken by the agent, but also conveys information about his past actions. The optimal contract in a two-effort choice, two-period setting is characterized analytically and numerically....

Repeated moral hazard, limited liability, and renegotiation∗

We consider a repeated moral hazard problem, where both the principal and the wealth-constrained agent are risk-neutral. In each of two periods, the principal can make an investment and the agent can exert unobservable effort, leading to success or failure. Incentives in the second period act as carrot and stick for the first period, so that effort is higher after a success than after a failure...

Incentive Design in Peer Review: Rating and Repeated Endogenous Matching

Peer review (e.g., grading assignments in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), academic paper review) is an effective and scalable method to evaluate the products (e.g., assignments, papers) of a large number of agents when the number of reviewing experts (e.g., teaching assistants, editors) is limited. Peer review poses two key challenges: 1) identifying the reviewers intrinsic capabilities (i...

Contracts , Information Persistence , and Renegotiation ∗

This paper studies how renegotiation and information persistence shape long-term contracts in principal-agent relationships. Truthful contracts that are renegotiation-proof, according to a concept tailored to account for persistence in the agent’s type, are characterized by their sensitivity to the reports of the agent. The sensitivity of the optimal renegotiation-proof contract is increasing i...
